Analysis
The opposition Umbrella for Demo- cratic Change (UDC) and its can- didate Duma Boko secured a landslide win in the 30 October general election, ending the Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) 58-year rule. The UDC, which won 37.2% of the popular vote and 37 out of 61 seats in parliament, will have to address the ongoing economic down- turn and rampant unemployment, as well as negotiate a new diamond deal with South African-owned De Beers. This governmental change is expected to usher in a new period of more compe- titive and issue-centered politics in the country.
